It wouldn’t be half empty, just half of the Uranium would have decayed into Thorium which quickly decays until it turns into Uranium-234 (which eventually continues to decay until it becomes Lead-206 which is stable and doesn’t decay).
If his time was precise he’d still end up with nearly 99% U and 1% Pb.
